Pendleton's River Parkway is a public walkway along the levee on the south bank of the Umatilla River. The 2.5 mile long Parkway passes through the heart of Pendleton and provides excellent views of the Umatilla River and adjacent riparian habitat as well as the wildlife living along the river. Parkway visitors may easily gain access to the Parkway at many points along its length.

 This checklist uses abundance to describe the number of birds of each of the 135 species a competent observer is likely to see and/or hear from the River Parkway. Abundance ratings are based on hundreds of hours of observations made between February 2001 and May 2002. The abundance of a species should not be confused with its detectability or visibility. Great Blue Herons, which are listed as rare (4-9 birds daily) during some seasons, are usually very visible along the Parkway. Ring-necked Pheasants and Downy Woodpeckers are more numerous than the abundance ratings indicate, but have low visibility during most seasons.

ABUNDANCE

SEASONS

VC = VERY COMMON: > 50 BIRDS PER DAY SP = MARCH 1 – MAY 31
C = COMMON: 25 – 50 BIRDS PER DAY SU = JUNE 1 – AUGUST 31
U = UNCOMMON: 10 – 24 BIRDS PER DAY F = SEPTEMBER 1 – NOVEMBER 30
R = RARE: 4 – 9 BIRDS PER DAY W = DECEMBER 1 – FEBRUARY 28/29
VR = VERY RARE: 1 – 3 BIRDS PER DAY
A = CASUAL: 1 or a few birds seen, but species probably not present every year.

BREEDING STATUS

I = INFREQUENT: "Infrequent" means the species was seen once or a few times during that season. However, the number seen any day may vary greatly among these infrequently seen species. For example, Bohemian Waxwings were observed four times, but one day 104 were seen. In contrast, White-throated Sparrows were seen five times, with one bird each time. (B) BREEDS ALONG OR ADJACENT TO PARKWAY – NESTS SEEN; ADULTS  CARRYING NEST MATERIAL OR FOOD; ADULTS CARING FOR YOUNG BIRDS.
